2. 體會這個詞 （進階篇）

“factor”作為名詞表示“因素”，作動詞它有一個很靈活的動詞短語：factor (something) in，意思是“將......考慮進去”。

當我們想表示“考慮到...”時，我們可能會立刻想到 “take something into account” “take something into consideration”，這時候我們其實也可以用 factor something in。來看幾個例子。

在北上這樣的城市月收入 1.5 萬元看似是高薪，但如果考慮到租房和其他生活成本，就沒那麼多了。就可以說：

When housing and other living costs are factored in, a monthly salary of ￥15,000 in Beijing and Shanghai does not seem that handsome.

美國電影《薩利機長》講了這樣一個故事：一個名叫薩利的機長在飛機引擎受到鳥的撞擊的情況下，沉著冷靜將飛機降落在哈德遜河上，所有的乘客都成功獲救。電影中，事故調查組堅持認為，雖然機長最終救了所有人的性命，但他涉嫌違規駕駛飛機。

Once you factor in the specific circumstances, you will appreciate how heroic the pilot's action was. （注意當 factor something in 中的'something'較長時，我們可以把它放到後面，變成 factor in something。）

評價學生的學術表現不能只看絕對的成績，而應該考慮到學生的社會經濟條件，就可以這麼說：

Students who are considered underachievers are actually overachievers once their socioeconomic statuses are factored in.
