2. 體會這個詞 （進階篇）

remain”幾乎在每期《經濟學人》中都會出現。它可以作不及物動詞，也可以作系動詞，今天的“每日一詞”側重後者。

顧名思義，系動詞連線主語和賓語，因此“remain”和“be”動詞幾乎可以同義替換（上面例句中的 remain 就可以換成 is）。不同點在於（正如英英釋義中說的），“remain”強調狀態的穩定性或延續性。

“remain” 後面可以接形容詞，常接 “un”開頭的形容詞，比如 unclear, unchanged, unanswered, unproven。來看兩個例子：

“remain“後也可以接名詞，比如常見的有 a secret, an enigma：

The fate of the injured remains unclear.

“remain”後面接“unclear”，意思是傷者的命運未卜。很多關於事故、災難的新聞報導中會出現這句話。

If it were Mr Ma of Alibaba, its shares would fall. If it were Mr Ma of Tencent, they would remain unchanged. And if it were Mr Li of Baidu, they would rise.

“remain”後面接“a secret”，強調的是這個演員的死因一直是個謎。這裡的名詞 “a secret” 也可以換成 un開頭的形容詞，因此這句話還可以這麼寫：
