Presentation Skills 1: The Overview and the Agenda

對話

1. Hi everyone, can everyone hear me? Can you guys at the back hear

everything?

2. I think all of you know why we are here this afternoon. As most of you are

aware, 2010 marks an important moment for Alpha Computers. We have

bounced back from the recession and now we are set to launch our new line of

laptop and desktop computers. I'm really pleased to welcome Michael Ford, the

Global Marketing Manager for Alpha Computers, who has flown in from

California to give all of you an overview of the marketing campaign, and to

answer any questions you may have. So please give a warm welcome to Mr.

Ford.

Michael Ford

1. Thank you, Jonathan. It really is a pleasure to be here today. It has been three

years since I visited Beijing, and it's clear to me that operations here are

obviously going from strength to strength. The Alpha brand continues to grow

in leaps and bounds in China, and that is certainly down to the hard work of all

of you here. So congratulations to all of you.

2. I'd like to start by outlining the key points of my presentation this afternoon

and giving you an idea of the topics that will be discussed. The presentation

today is divided into five main parts. First of all, I'd like to briefly touch on the

background of the new x420 line; how the whole concept has come about, and

how the new product fits into our existing brand line. Secondly I'd like to

present data on projected sales for the x420. We will then go on to discuss our

key rivals in this sector. Then I would like to go on to outline the campaign

concept for the x420. Finally, I'm happy to open up the discussion for any

questions or points you might have for me.

Culture

Beginning your presentation can be very scary. In fact, most people get very nervous. But, if you get off to a good start, your presentation will go smoothly and you will become more confident as you continue. So try these tips next time you have to give a presentation!

1) Relax

Before you begin to introduce your topic, greet your audience in a warm and friendly way. Take a deep breath and imagine yourself beginning your presentation. Walk around the room, if possible, to help you work off any nervous energy. Make eye contact with the audience, smile and act confident, even if you don't feel it. Know that the audience wants you to succeed!

2) Surprise

When introducing your presentation, you need to really get the attention of the audience. Begin with an interesting fact. A recent headline or current event that has something to do with the topic of your presentation would work well. Also, tell a personal story that will illustrate a point you will be making during your presentation. Include relevant detail in creative way. This will show your passion for the subject.

3) Tell

One old but effective strategy is to "tell them what you are going to tell them, then tell them, then tell them what you told them." Professional public speakers have long used this simple concept to help get them through their presentation. It sounds simple, but it works!

Upper-Intermediate – Presentation Skills 1 :  The Overview and The Agenda

Now that you've studied this lesson on your own, it's time to use the following activities to practice the language you've learned with your teacher.

This lesson plan is designed for a 50-min one-on-one class focused on speaking practice and feedback.Opening chat --- 5 minutes

Class Activities: (30-35 minutes)

Objective: In this lesson, we look at how to effectively give a presentation, including language and strategies to introduce your topic and begin your presentation successfully.

1) Read the dialogue with the students---5 minutes

Read the dialogue with the students line by line. Switch roles after the first run. Pay attention to students’ pronunciation; give feedback and help when needed.

2) Dialogue Comprehension----5 minutes

Ask the student the following questions. The answers are in the dialogue:

Why has Michael Ford flown in to Beijing? And where from?

What is Alpha Computers about to launch?

How does Mr. Ford want to start his presentation?

There are 5 main points in Mr. Ford’s presentation. What are they?

3.) Cultural Takeaway----5 minutes

Discuss with your student what some of the most important things are when giving a presentation. Ask your student what they think makes a good business presentation. Write down and discuss the comments they make. You should get things like:

1. Presenter should stand up straight.

2. Presenter should make good eye contact with audience.

3. Presenter should have a pleasant, yet loud, tone so it's easy to hear him/her

4. Presenter should have a strong beginning to the presentation.

5. A good presentation should have an introduction, a body, a conclusion, and ask for questions.

6. A presentation should be easy to understand and interesting.

4.) Fluency Builder----10 minutes

The beginning of a presentation is the most important part.  This is when you establish a connection with the audience and when you have their attention.

Strategies for getting the audiences’ attention and beginning your presentation:

Right.              Well.                Ok.                   Good.               Fine.                Great.

Shall we start?           Let’s get started.                    Let’s get down to business.

Let’s get the ball rolling.                   Let’s begin.                 Let’s get going.

In English-speaking countries, it’s not uncommon for the speaker to begin with a joke or a statement to surprise the audience, in order to get their attention, to get people to listen, to get them curious and to make them feel relaxed. In the dialogue, the presentation topic is introduced by announcing that 2010 is an important year for Alpha Computers (causing curiosity perhaps) and by directly giving praise and thanks to the audience (making them feel relaxed and attentive) when he credits them for their hard work and congratulates the audience.

To specifically greet the audience, it’s common to say things like: hello, good morning, good afternoon, ladies & gentlemen, fellow colleagues, members of the board, esteemed guests, etc.

From there, you proceed to introduce yourself, give your presentation title and introduce the subject.

What exactly are you going to speak about? Introduce your topic in time and place, and in relation to the audience.

Ask your student: What are some phrases you can use to introduce your presentation subject?

I plan to speak about…

Today I’m going to talk about…

The subject of my presentation is….

The theme of my talk is….

I will be giving you an overview of…

5.) Role play / Discussion----5 minutes

Have the student imagine a current, real situation where they could give a presentation. Is it a conference room at work? Is it in a classroom at school?

Ask these important questions for them to consider before giving a presentation. Understanding and being familiar with your surroundings before giving your presentation can really help make it more relaxed and successful. Have the student answer aloud and discuss possible strategies for preparing your physical surroundings.

-       Who is my audience?

-       How big is the room?

-       What equipment is in the room? Do you need any of the equipment?

-       Do you need a whiteboard? Markers? Eraser?

-       Is there a podium?

-       Where are you going to put your notes and papers?

6.) Review and assign homework: ---5 minutes

Review today’s class. Encourage the student on where he/she did well; give feedback to where he/she needs to pay more attention.

Assign homework, i.e. the ‘Exercise’ part of today’s lesson. Student should complete it and submit it online. They will see an automatic score.

Have them listen to the dialogue again and see if their understanding has improved.

Remind students that they can save different vocabulary terms in the app or online and review them as flashcards.

Tell the student what the next lesson is.
