KWIC (Keyword in Context) display

To see concordance (KWIC) lines in COCA, you would normally input a word via Word, and then select KWIC on the next page, e.g.: point (n), break (v), fathom (v), utter (j), or diametrically.

The only time that you'd want to use the form to the left is when you want to see KWIC lines for a string of words (e.g. put away or fire station), or when you need to do a complicated sort (e.g. one word left + two words right).

Note however that using the form to the left for individual words (especially high frequency words) will be much slower, and in many cases the search will "time out", resulting in an error. In nearly all cases, it is much better to find concordance / KWIC lines via Word.

See the patterns in which a word occurs, by sorting the words to the left and/or right. For example: budge (v), matter (n), diametrically, end up, or naked eye.

How to do it:

- - - - - - - *

Select the words that you want to sort with. Select L for 1, 2, and 3 words to the left. Select R for 1, 2, and 3 words to the right. You could also, for example, sort by one word to the left, then one and two words to the right. Click * to clear the entries and start over.

You can find a wealth of information for the top 60,000 words in the corpus. As the following examples with bread show, you can see:

  • an overview of all of the information below
  • related topics (words that co-occur anywhere on the web page)
  • collocates (automatically grouped by part of speech)
  • clusters (the most frequent 2, 3, and 4 word strings)
  • a resortable Keyword in Context (concordance) display
  • related words (synonyms and WordNet entries), and
  • websites use that word the most (can use these to create Virtual Corpora).
