The apple of one's eye

瞳孔常用“pupil”來表達，不過，“the apple of the eye”也可表達此意，如《聖經》中：“Keep me as the apple of the eye.”（求你保護我，如同保護眼中的瞳孔。）正因為這一典故，大約9世紀，短語“the apple of one's eye”（掌上明珠）開始被人們廣泛使用。 i.e.: Tom is the apple of his grandmother's eye.

The writing on the wall“The writing on the wall”常見於新聞報導或文學讀本，指的是a sign or warning of impending disaster（迫在眉睫的凶兆、不祥之兆）。
其淵源確實和“占卜”掛鉤，可追溯到《舊約·但以理書》,《舊約》中記載： 古巴比倫國王Belshazar（伯沙撒）在宮殿裡設宴縱飲時，忽然看到一個神秘的手指在王宮牆上寫看不懂的文字，後來，國王叫到虜囚猶太預言家Daniel（但以理）才搞明白，牆上的字表示“大難臨頭”。如預言所示，伯沙撒當夜被殺，新國王由瑪代人大利烏繼任。 正由於這個“身死國王”的典故，the finger on the wall（牆上的手指）或the writing on the wall（牆上的文字）常和動詞see或read連用，用來形容“不祥之兆”。所以，剛才的例句——The official saw the writing on the wall and fled the country——就可翻譯為：“這個官員預感到自己將有大難，立即逃到了國外。”

The salt of the earth據《新約·馬太福音》記載：耶穌對他的門徒說：“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? ”（你們是世上的鹽，鹽若失了味，如何才能再鹹呢？）在這裡，salt轉義為elite of the world（中堅力量，精英，高尚的人）。
說“你加深我的痛苦”最常用You've rubbed salt in my wounds（你在我傷口上撒了把鹽）
When I entered the banquet hall, they all stood up and asked me to sit above the salt.（我一走進宴會廳，他們都站了起來，請我坐上席。）
