ejb object too much ,how server working??

who got any experience can share to me when create or design a stock system.

problem :
how to know total of object in database??
is throught BMP to self design?

in my mind ,each thing is OO , when design stock also will get too many product in stock .like a product check in , check out too many , how we design this kind os system. because when i want know still got how many object in stock , we need get all all object in database right? and then iterator it or collection.size() to get it right? if like that ,when too many object /record ,get out all in memory ,will usage too many memory , server will out of memory ,so that how to settle it??

use one special object to control the total number???
