Symptoms

ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS via RMAN hangs for hours.

Cause

not reproducible and the root cause has ben undetermined.
 

Solution

Do the open via SQLPlus after completing recovery with RMAN.

As this is being done in a new SQLPlus session , recovery must be done again to allow open with resetlogs:

SQL> recover database using backup controlfile until cancel;
       ---&gt Type 'cancel'
SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
