This problem can occur on any platform.

SYMPTOMS

During installation OUI failed with following error on AIX5L Based Systems (64-bit).

This was a fresh installation and no other Oracle software/DB exists.

OUI-10020: The target area /u01/app/oracle1/oraInventory is being used as a source by another
session. A write lock cannot be obtained.

There was no error in the InstallAction.log, last few lines of it:

CAUSE

The reasons for this error can be:

Specific software is holding a lock on the OraInventory file:
i.e. NetIq software (third party monitoring tool) held the lock on OraInventory file.
Someone else is running an Oracle installation at the same time from the same Oracle_home
