Symptoms

1) Attempts to use DBA_TABLESPACE_USAGE_METRICS have resulted in:

  • Inconsistent or incorrect values for DBA_TABLESPACE_USAGE_METRICS when compared to other space metrics using scripts for DBA_DATA_FILES, DBA_TABLESPACES, DBA_FREE_SPACE ... etc.
  • Incorrect, undersized or oversized values used by GC, EM or DBConsole for Tablespace metric ALERTs

2) Tablespaces can 'fill up' leading to potential database or application stoppage due to this improper metric assessment.  The problem is that by surpassing the expected ALERT thresholds DBAs are not warned of the space utilitization problem.

Changes

No known changes are associated with the problem:

  • The problem can be intermittent for a single tablespace
  • The problem may occur for only one or a few of the total tablespaces measured or monitored by EM ( this is usually the case, making the problem more unexpected )

Cause

The problem is due to an incorrect definition for DBA_TABLESPACE_USAGE_METRICS.

Some of the problems that needed to be fixed in DBA_TABLESPACE_USAGE_METRICS include:

  • DBA_TABLESPACE_USAGE_METRICS usage should not include objects in the recycle bin
  • Tablespace usage percentage differs depending on tables (views) used
  • Inconsistencies in tablespace usage calculation / not getting tablespace alerts Bug 6629893

The most recent fix for this problem is applying the patch for Bug 6629893 .

Solution

Download and apply the patch from Metalink for Bug 6629893 .
This is a generic patch which is available for:

  • 10.1.0.5
  • 10.2.0.2
  • 10.2.0.3
  • 10.2.0.4

As this is a generic patch, this means the patch is essentially a script that rebuilds DBA_TABLESPACE_USAGE_METRICS prerequisite objects.

This bug is fixed in the 10.2.0.5 patchset.

Comment: It is important to know if you attempt to assess 9i SPACE from 10g GRID CONTROL that 9i does *not* include the DBA_TABLESPACE_USAGE_METRICS view. No patch is available
