I installed Oracle 10g on linux, and the ollowing messages started appearing in the alert log:
"error 46 encountered when initializing ldm."
For a while I ignored them, but now, when 10 people are testing our application against the 10g database, these messages appear with the average periodicity of 2 per second:

the alert log grows by 8mb per day because of them. Oracle server appears to be working OK besides that. What do these messages mean? How to get rid of them? Does anyone know? Please help.

Hi,
We had earlier encountered similar issues regarding this error which is due to obsoleted or improper kernel parameters and the general solution is to set them according to the requirement as specified in the installation guide. Please set them accordingly and try installing it again.
If you still face the same problem please log a Technical Assistance Request (iTAR).

I am sorry - but your answer is not good enough :-)
Please provide me more detailed information (yes, I am getting this error as well)
I am using kernel parameters setting exactly as listed in Linux section of oracle installation guide for Unix systems.

Also, please consider the fact, that giving such a formal answers usualy ends in conversation with your manager.

I have an iTAR open since October 2 on this same issue. It has been passed from analyst to analyst with no solution. I have answered all of the information requests, including several RDA runs. I was amused by one of the analyst's observation that this is a common problem but no one at Oracle has documented a solution. If 10g doesn't work on Linux, tell us.

What is the latest on this issue???

I just noticed that I also got two entries of this sort in my alert log. No Kernel parameters have been changed for over a month.

Last week and up to a couple of days ago we were experiencing Memory errors (ORA-04030) due to the fact that the SGA was set too high (first 1.7 and then 1.4 GB) with a total of 2 GB RAM. After shrinking the SGA to 1.0 GB, we seem to be running normally, but never had I seen this message since today.

I am running Oracle 10.1.0.3.0 on Solaris 5.9

Due to the total lack of support from Oracle, and BTW, I did open a tar with Oracle and it was quite useless. I am still having this issue on the database, but after playing around I have found that the problem is likely caused by the incorrect glibc libraries or some kind of other OS libraries. Kernel parameters are set EXACTLY as specified by oracle and in addition, Oracle even checks the parameters during the install.

After installing linux from a different sets of CDs, the problem goes away. So far, Oracle 10.1.0.2.0 has been running quite smoothly on Linux AS 3.0 and this problem did not occur.

Mike,

This problem could be due to improper Host name setting.
A bug (3986829) is raised (which is unpublished) to address this issue but got closed finally since the problem was with the Hostname which was not set correctly and so was unable to register with the instance.

I have modified the /etc/hosts files and removed a special character which was there by mistake after the hostname alias. After the character was removed, messages in the alert log stopped appearing. And the problem is now resolved.

Hi,
I believe that you have hit a bug in 10.1.2.0. After applying the patch for 10.1.3.0 the bug persists. You better raise a TAR to resolve this issue.
