Bob Bowles發現並掃描了一張1981年的Unix廣告。現在看來，可能沒什麼大不了。我也翻出一張，還有Vincent Guyot提供了一張Xenix廣告。 - Dennis

MediaOne的Bob Bowles掃描了一張1981年某期Datamation雜誌刊登的廣告。他在網路論壇（Netnews）上提及這張廣告；我拼接了一下，並做了一定的重取樣和壓縮。

貝爾系統（Bell System，1984年拆分前）研究軟體的“定位”一直非常奇特。用於學術研究的話，價格低廉（想想BSD出自哪裡？），同時也提供給商業和政府部門，但是從未被當作一款產品。1984年後，AT&T才得以併力圖將其打造成一項業務，但是並未獲得巨大成功。（有段時間，我經常講一個段子：知道嗎，除了Bill McGowan，AT&T在Ken和我身上花的錢比誰都多。）

製作這張廣告的Greensboro分部現在歸屬朗訊（Lucent），仍在運營（參看SSG頁面），但廣告上的電話號碼或郵政信箱編號早已失效。

廣告裡漫畫的意圖很難解釋或理解。它以擬人化的手法呈現鈔票正被吸入一臺計算機，我猜是為了與“不用昂貴的硬體”這一題頭呼應，但總的來說，整幅畫看起來還是有點怪。

下面這張Unix廣告的照片來自朗訊（Lucent）檔案室，標註日期為1980年，我記得見過這張廣告，但忘了是在哪裡。照片沒有隨附副本（？），不過從說明文字可以略知一二。
