“third-level institutions”是“三級學院”？

《牛津通識讀本·基督教神學》（譯林出版社2014年6月1版1次印刷）第7頁中有下面這樣一段話：

第三點考慮是，基督教是世界上最大的宗教，在各類三級學院中專攻基督教神學的學生和教師數量遠遠多過研究其他神學的，……。

三級學院，不知道說的是什麼，一開始以為應該是“三一學院”的筆誤。後面看了書後面所附的英文原文，才知道我的猜測並不正確。原文是這樣的：

Christianity is the largest of the world's religions, it has by far the largest number of students and teachers specializing in theology in third-level institutions, ……

與“三級學院”對應的英文單詞是“third-level institutions”，將“third-level institutions”翻譯為“三級學院”顯然屬於望文生義，沒有想一想漢語中是否有這樣一個詞。其實，這裡的關鍵詞是“third-level“。在英語中，“third-level institutions”雖然感覺不是很常見，但“third-level education”卻很常見。教育按層次分，有primary education，secondary education以及tertiary education，即higher education, 也被稱為 post-secondary education和 third-level education，漢語中對應的就是初等教育、中等教育和高等教育。

因此，"third-level institutions"的正確翻譯應該是"高等院校"。看來，中英文對照還是很有用的。 附：在亞馬遜上能夠搜到這本書2011年的版本，這樣說來，這本書2014年應該算是重新出版了，這個錯誤在2011年的版本上應該也存在。
